HISTORY

What follows is a brief overview of the history of AWSHC until the present day.

1944 AWSHC is incorporated in the State of Maryland by Marie Werking and several others.

1951 AWSHC is granted 501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service.

1965 Marie Werking arranges to have some of her land deeded to a trust for the primary purposes of benefitting AWSHC.

1988 Marie Werking dies.

2018 AWSHC employee is arrested, charged and convicted of embezzling nearly $40,000 from the rescue.  This person still has not paid back the stolen money.

2019 AWSHC board member is arrested, charged and convicted on charges of animal cruelty.

2020 Governance of AWSHC is relinquished by the existing Board of Directors and assigned to a new Board of Directors unaffiliated with the previous board.

2021 New AWSHC governance begins the process of rehabilitating the greatly neglected facility to restore its condition to a functional state.

2021 AWSHC regains its permission to solicit for charitable contributions in Maryland.

2021 AWSHC collaborates with Howard County to assign successor trustees to the land trust to replace deceased previous trustees.
